The Beginning: The First World War was one of the bloodiest and most fierce wars of all time, with over 32 countries fighting, and in the end costing an estimated 10,000,000 deaths. Although not as extensive as the second world war, it was in many cases more horrid, and helped form the new world, but I will start with the beginning of the war. The Beginning: The day was June 28th 1914, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was visiting the town of Sarajevo, but well arriving at the town hall, he was assassinated by the serbian nationalist group known as the Blackhand. Austria-Hungary now with no heir to the throne (The archduke was to replace the disliked Franz josef), sends an Ultimatum to serbia, stating that the assassin was to be handed over to the Austro-Hungarian officials, but they had known that Serbia would reject the ultimatum, starting a "Gentle-men's" war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia - What resulted was anything but that. Serbia having slavic ties with the russian empire, asked for aid from them, which they did receive, and when news reached them, Austria-Hungary sought help from their ally Germany, if russia were to declare war on them, Germany agreed with great haste. War was declared on July 28th 1914, and thus the beginning of The Great War, although this was only the beginning, many more countries joined over time. Listed here are a few of the countries that are best known. France: Was bound by a treaty with russia, declared war on Germany on August 1st 1914. Britain: Bound by a treaty with france, but more impotently, coming to the aid of Belgium, which Germany was invading, declared war on germany on August 4th 1914, note that this brought the whole commonwealth into the war, including Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand. Italy: Found a way to avoid the war, even though allied to Germany and Austria-Hungary, but declared war on both former allies in May 1915, due to Germany's "Offensive" actions. Japan: Due to an agreement with Britain, they declared war on Germany on August 23rd 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on them August 25th. United States: Declared Neutrality, avoiding any conflict in the war, this lasted until Germany allowed submarines to fight unrestricted. The U.S. declared war on April 6th 1917 Well this more or less sums up the start of the war, please check back for further updates, and more pieces about the war.
